Boarding school life
Daily schedule
The structured daily schedule at schools in Australia and New Zealand is very similar to that of boarding schools in the UK and North America. The day begins with breakfast and morning classes. Afternoon lessons are held after lunch. During the later part of the afternoon, sports, arts, music and theatre events are held. Here again, homework is done by students after the evening meal. Sports/leisure activities
Depending on the season, boarding schools offer a richly varied program of sports. But in contrast to schools in Europe and North America, a wide range of outdoor activities is offered here too, such as camping, kayaking, rafting and much more besides. In this part of the world, great importance is attached to these activities. Accommodation
Accommodation at boarding schools in Australia and New Zeeland varies considerably, ranging from single rooms to double and triple rooms and dormitories with cubicles for the lower classes. The accommodation facilities tend to be rather simple. At some schools in Australia and New Zealand students can also be accommodated in a guest family. The family is selected with great care by the school’s own specialised homestay coordinator.
back to top Homework
At boarding schools in Australia and New Zealand, homework is also done in the evening after dinner.
back to top Weekends
Regular classes are held on Saturday morning at many schools. However, Saturday afternoon is set aside for leisure activities. Students choose how they spend their weekends, either participating in sports or in other leisure programs. Sundays are mainly devoted to relaxation.
back to top Holidays
As in the US, the campus is generally closed during the holidays. Many international students are lucky enough to be invited home by their new friends from the region during these periods. If this is not the case, schools will be glad to help students find a guest family.
back to top Care
The boarding school section of schools in Australia and New Zealand is usually very small. With only around 50 to 80 students the atmosphere is very much like being in a family. Houseparents and tutors are available to students for counselling and support.
